Once
the film is completed, we believe Keep Your Ear on the
Ball will benefit the community of visually impaired
children and adults by countering stock depictions of blindness.
Keep Your Ear on the Ball offers an honest, vibrant picture
of teenagers with visual impairments. By providing an intimate
and complex look at these teens, Keep Your Ear on the Ball
will promote acceptance and appreciation of people with visual
impairments.
Sponsored
by the nonprofit organization All
Blind Children of Texas, our efforts have been informed
and supported by the students, staff, administration, and
faculty of the Texas
School for the Blind and Visually Impaired and by the
United States
Association of Blind Athletes (USABA).

Companion
Curriculum
A generous
match grant from the Meadows
Foundation will support our efforts to create companion
curricula to be used with the film. Working closely with All
Blind Children of Texas and the Texas School for the Blind,
we will develop an intensive and interactive unit of study for
use in special education and general education classrooms. Educators
who teach the Keep Your Ear on the Ball curriculum will guide
their students through a challenging and thought provoking examination
of themes raised by the film. The Meadows Foundation has pledged
up to $42,500 to match contributions made to support this educational
outreach initiative. This means you can double the impact of
your contribution by making a donation today!

Special
Screenings
In cooperation
with All Blind
Children of Texas, we will host a special screening at the
Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired. This presentation
will kick off a tour of screenings at schools for the blind
across the country. We will partner with local and regional
organizations concerned with blindness to promote these events.

DVD
Features
The DVD
release will include the option of audio description. Visually
impaired audiences will experience the film with the benefit
of descriptive narration similar to a standard DVD commentary
track. Copies of the DVD, with the option of audio description,
and closed-captioning for the hearing impaired, will be made
available to libraries, foundations, and individuals.

Promoting
Physical Fitness
The film
will also have a positive impact on the physical fitness of
young people with visual impairments. Visually impaired teens
face even greater risks of youth obesity and low levels of physical
activity than their sighted peers. (Download
a PDF study about physical fitness levels in visually impaired
children.) Studies have shown that goalball participation improves
balance, flexibility, and other measures of motor fitness. (Download
a PDF study about physical fitness levels of goalball players.)
We believe Keep Your Ear on the Ball will dramatically increase
awareness of goalball as a sport and will lead to increased
participation in the sport among young people with visual impairments.
